Origin Story: Why I Started SAGE
Since 2007, I’ve been working alongside biotech leaders and their teams, helping them bridge the gap between strategy, planning, and execution. I began in R&D and Medical Affairs within established biopharma, but everything shifted when I was asked to design and build the Medical Affairs function for an emerging biotech in 2011. I was hooked.
The pace was faster. The challenges were more complex. Less bureaucracy. The people were smart and deeply committed to bringing life-changing therapies to patients. But they were largely science focused - the unmet need was how to build a drug development company that could transition to a viable commercial business. That’s when my passion for mastering the biotech journey really began — and I’ve since realized it’s a journey no one ever truly “masters.” It’s a constant process of learning, adapting, and connecting the dots.
Originally I focused on late-stage biotechs preparing for launch, I noticed familiar patterns:
A commercialization model that wasn’t fully formed, tested, or aligned among stakeholders.
An underestimation of what it means to treat launch readiness as an enterprise-wide transformation, not just a commercial milestone.
Early decisions on talent, systems, processes, and vendors made in isolation, without considering their downstream impact.
At the same time, I watched companies bring in large consulting firms or specialized vendors. They got deliverables — a launch plan, a forecast, a market research deck, a system, services, etc. — but the pieces didn’t connect. The big picture was still missing.
So I asked: Who’s helping leaders actually plot the biotech journey? Who’s organizing the complexity across functions so science can succeed in the real world? How could we harness what we’ve learned and put it to work for emerging biotech leaders?
SAGE’s Mission
We’re not here to tell you how to run your science, your clinical trials, or your regulatory pathway — that’s the dominant focus and you already have experts for that.
Our expertise is helping you address leadership challenges that may only be whispered: organizational friction, decision bottlenecks, silos, and the kinds of missteps that can slow down even the best science. I believe these issues are preventable if they get the right attention. Our role is to help you and your team step back, see the bigger picture, get clear on where you’re going, make stronger decisions, and build plans everyone can commit to — not just what to do, but why it matters.
In fast-moving biotechs, uncertainty, competing priorities, and misalignment come with the territory. That doesn’t mean you have to accept it and shoulder on your own. Our mission is to ease that burden for people, anticipate what’s ahead, cut through the noise, and help you and your team push forward together with confidence and cohesion.
What Makes SAGE Unique
I asked clients and friends to be candid about my impact. These are the perspectives I bring to every engagement.
“You bring a wealth of knowledge and experience we can rely on.”
“You make complex issues understandable and actionable.”
“You roll up your sleeves and help us get things done.”
“You challenge the status quo and help us be our best.”
“You bring energy, insight, and a genuine commitment to helping us succeed.”
When I stepped back, a few themes stood out:
Seeing what others miss. I connect science, business, and operations in ways that reveal opportunities others don’t always see.
Making complexity clear. I distill tough problems into practical steps that people can rally around.
A trustworthy partner. People know they can be candid with me. I listen closely, ask the right questions, and help expand their thinking. They share what they wouldn’t say elsewhere because they know I’ll offer thoughtful perspectives and discretion.
